| Rehabilitation project of Kaunas HPP |
|

| In compliance with the Single Programming Document (SDP) the project is supported by the Republic of Lithuania |
The project is partially financed by the EU Regional Development Fund |
Kaunas HPP modernisation and rehabilitation is listed in the National Energy Strategy among the measures assigned to ensure the least cost development and operation of the power supply systems as well as to increase the reliability of electricity supply.
The objective of the project is the modernisation of Kaunas HPP by increasing reliability, safety and efficiency of electricity supply to consumers. Support for the project implementation allocated from the European Union structural funds amounts LTL29.2m.
The main targets of the project are as follows: rehabilitation of the hydro power plant, improvement of its control and regulation processes, strengthening of environmental protection.
In the course of the project implementation, obsolete equipment in the power plant will be replaced by the modern one and a new control system will be installed.
Upon the rehabilitation of the biggest hydro power plant in the country, electricity supply in Lithuania will become more reliable and safe, the efficiency of operation of the electricity sector will be improved and the potential negative impact on the environment will be decreased:
- The efficiency of the power plant will be increased by 4 per cent;
- The reliability of operation of the power plant will be increased three times and the possibility to restore the operation of the power system after a complete blackout will be ensured;
- The appropriate range and quality of the power plant’s regulation will be ensured;
- The life time of the power plant will be extended by more than 25 years;
- The periods between overhauls of the main units will be extended from 5 to 20 years;
- Replaced turbine runners, bearings and sealings will prevent oil leakage into the Nemunas.
On July 7, 2005 the Contract Agreement for the modernisation and rehabilitation of Kaunas HPP was signed with ALSTOM Power Sweden AB.
The first stage of rehabilitation was completed November 30, 2008.
Turbines - new turbine runner was designed and tested; -main turbine nodes were manufactured and refurbished – runners, shafts casings of turbine bearings, blade wheels, foot bearings and radial bearings, fastening rings, speed regulation system, cooling and braking systems; -runner chambers were installed.
Generators -windings of stators and rotors inspected, re-wedged, cleaned and tested; -new excitation and control systems of units installed.
Fire safety system -fire extinction pump-house was installed; -a half of fire extinction water supply pipes and water –taps were installed; -fire fighting system of Units 3 and 4 installed;
Cooling systems - installation of cooling system for Unit 3 and Unit 4 was completed;
Ventilation system - main part of equipment was delivered, installation works finished; -equipment of ventilation systems supplied and installed.
Lighting new lighting panels, lighting and power grid in KHPP building installed.
Interior -approx. 90 percent of all premises reconstructed; -new 10 kV and 0.4 kV , fire safety and DC panel rooms were equipped, as well as a room for DC panel for Stage 1. ; -hydro insulation of cable room was repaired.
Exterior -New wings of control room and ventilation were constructed; -Hydro insulation of machine room ceiling repaired, the road surface and fencing repaired; -windows replaced and facade of machine room redecorated (approx. 90 per cent); -hydro insulation of intake roller gates and switch gear rooms repaired.
Two unit transformers of 60MVA each were rehabilitated: - installed 10kV and 0.4kV swichgears of 1 block, auxiliary transformer No 4 and auxiliary bussbars; - bussbars and 10kV cables installed between the generators No.3 and No4 and T-2;-protection and control panels manufactured and installed along with hardware and software.
- Hydro mechanical equipment
- two bridge cranes were rehabilitated; - four gantry cranes were rehabilitated; -additional forebay stoplogs were manufactured; -stoplogs at forebay and afterbay were refurbished;; -high-pressure equipment at roller gates of units No 3 and No 4 were replaced; -fencing of spillway reconstructed.
In 2009 the modernization works, i.e. the reconstruction of the first and the second unit, were continued. The first unit was assembled, tested and connected to the grid. The same year saw the end of the works in Kaunas HPP 10 kV switchyard and the 0.4 kV switchyard for domestic needs, the replacement of all cables with fire resistant cables, the installation of the new excitation, control and cooling system of hydro unit No.1. The control system of the hydro power plant was also installed in 2009. In 2010, it is planned to finish the reconstruction works of the hydro power plant and hand over the results to the state commission.
